Personally, I tend to operate between 8 and 12 unless I am looking for a less vivid and more muted color palette in which I don't want the AI to overemphasize and make a bright picture, then I scale down to the 5-7 range. Below 5 tends to just look too far off as I use a lot of details in my prompts around lighting, setting, point of views, etc and end up a little too dull for my tastes. But do what works best for you!
